Women in Nicaragua are faced with the
same monthly challenges we here in the US are but unfortunately
due to their economic situation they can no afford menstrual products.
In the communities I work in woman
tell me it cost 75 cents for a pack of 10 which only last them a
day to a day in a half. Most women's cycle last up to 8 days, costing
them up to a weeks wages for some families. Since it is impossible
to give up a weeks wages husbands are forced to make their wives
us torn up t-shirts and other clothes.
During my visit in March I introduced
washable menstrual pads to these women. You would have thought I
offered them a new car or a new house. They were so excited. They
all felt this was one of the most practical ways I could help them
as women.
Thanks to the help of Kim with All
Things Cloth and Jill Cooper from Heavenly
Blessed we have designed a holder with three pads (shown below).
This gives them one for night, morning and again in the afternoon.
Because of the all year hot climate they can wash them out and have
them dried for another use in no time. Additionally, they have a
product there to clean with that is much more powerful than any
cleaning product here in the US.
I have had comments that this seems
a little odd using washable pads but let me assure you if you had
to wear a t-shirt as a pad verses this very well designed, contoured
to fit, water proof, designer pad, you would choose to wash them
out as well.
I am accepting donations to purchase
each set. The cost is $6.

As a woman I feel so blessed I have been born here in the US with
access to resources and products to make my monthly cycle easier
to handle. I have seen what it is like for woman in Nicaragua who
have no resources, money and products to use and it is very sad
for them and most feel unclean during that time of the month. Many
women will not attend church during their cycles because of fear
and feeling unclean.

All proceeds will go directly to purchasing
