  Coffradia Garden Project

After my July 08 trip I came home with the idea of starting a garden project. Through great friends I was able to raise enough money to purchase shovels, hoes, wheel barrows, seeds, irrigations systems and hire a trainer for the village of Coffradia.

Thirty-six families choose to participate and committed to working. Most of us think, surely they know how to raise a garden, but they don't. They can't afford the $8 it cost for the shovel and the ground is so hard without tools there is just no way. No tools, no experience leads to no food.

I am happy to say that crops were planted in August and families are now reaping the harvest of tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, radishes, onions, lettuce, okra, watermelon, zucchini and several more.

Comments from the families have been very positive. They are so grateful to be able to know today they will have food from their OWN gardens. It saves them money and they are already working on taking seeds from this harvest and the training they received to start the next.

What a great way to show these people Jesus.

In February 09 I revisited the village and found families already producing their next harvest. I met with all the families and heard how wonderful it was to have their own food for the first time in thier lives. During the harvest peppers sold for 5 cordabas at the market. That's about 20 cents each. How can a family making only a $1 per day afford 1 20 cent pepper for dinner?

This project has had amazing success. Many of the local people said there was no way crops would grow in this community. God showed them He can do anything... View the second set of crops here.
